Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) at Roaring Fork Schools

At Roaring Fork Schools, we believe social-emotional learning (SEL) is just as important as academic learning. SEL helps students build self-awareness, manage emotions, strengthen relationships, and make responsible decisions, skills that support success in school and in life.

Every student experiences SEL in their daily school routines, from Crew classes that foster belonging and connection to lessons taught by counselors and teachers that develop skills like teamwork, empathy, and perseverance. Our programming is grounded in the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework and delivered through Second Step, our districtwide curriculum for SEL. Second Step provides structured, evidence-based lessons that directly align to CASEL’s five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

We also provide tiered supports: universal instruction for all students, small-group lessons for students who need extra help, and individualized support for students with more intensive needs. This ensures that every student receives the right level of care and guidance.

To monitor progress, we utilize student surveys and SEL screeners to identify strengths and areas for growth. Schools set goals, track progress, and celebrate improvements, helping us continuously strengthen how we support student well-being.
